Nintendo DS lite invades Japan.

By adding style to the functionality of the Nintendo DS, the Japaneses engineers have taken some hints from Apple and boosted the appeal of their coveted DS. This article gives a good description of the changes that include a much brighter and more detailed screen and a really solid redesigned body. Take a look. This might not replace your iPod but making the DS less of a toy and more of a gadget should put it into the pockets of at least a few more students.

kegbot beer device... beer me!

This is the greatest display of technology and alcoholism. Imagine a system where you have a refrigerator, keg tap, flow meter, identification keys, and computer software that tracks not only your pints but your lifetime pint count, your blood alcohol right now, your highest blood alcohol and a whole lot more.

I am building one of these for sure.

p.s. This spell checker tried to replace kegbot with sexpot. Whats up with that?

How do you stay awake on campus???????

If you're anything like me than you have a severe, borderline dangerous caffeine addiction; however, if you just like the occasional pick me up to pull through an all-nighter, here's a guide to the best energy drinks on the market. Having a dozen Tim Hortons definitely helps fuel a good caffeine buzz but don't hesitate to mix it up every now and again.

Overheard At Western

For those of you that loved the Overheard in NY site, here's one a little closer to home. Check out:

www.overheardatwestern.blogspot.com

Tuning into the middle of a conversation usually results in you hearing something kinda like this

Girl #1: You're drunk.
Girl #2: I'm wearing sweatpants, so I'm obviously NOT drunk!
Girl #1: What?! Explain.
Girl #2: I'm wearing sweatpants. I wear sweatpants when I'm alone. I don't drink when I'm alone. Therefore I can't be drunk.
Girl #1: You're wearing sweatpants now, and you're not alone....
Girl #2: I'm NOT drunk!

or

Girl #1: I'm not a slut just because I made out with [so-and-so] and then slept with that other guy, am I?
Girl #2: I don't think so.

For more stupid conversations check out these other sites as well:

Come to the WEGA booth during clubs week to meet me.

I'll be at the Western Electronic Gamers Association booth this week promoting our club and this years events. Come and check out the line-up of gaming events that we have in store for members and you can meet me too. Keep in mind I am always interested in suggestions for the site and the up-coming podcast so feel free to come to me with any input you have. OneWestern is a student resource that is produced and funded by students so while we might know a bit more about what interests us as students, we always love to hear what you have to say about it.

Hope to see many of you this week at all of the booths in and around the UCC.

ENGINEERING USED TEXTBOOK SALE

BUY AND SELL USED TEXTBOOKS

Tuesday, September 13 2005
5:30 PM
SEB 1001 UES Resource Room

If you’re in ENG and you want to save some money on books, check out the used book sale. Most students save about $200+ by buying their books used rather than new. Some things to look for:

-Make sure that your prof is still using the same book!

-If your prof is using a previous edition of the same book, go to the book store on campus and see if you can see any differences between the new book and the old edition.
(Commonly they just mix up the practice questions and stager the chapters.)

-Take your textbook list with the prices for each book NEW so that you can compare your used book to the new price. Try to get your book for 60% of the new list value depending on the book.

-Don't buy the first book you see. There are lots of students selling books, so see if you can get the best price available.

-Don't buy previous year lab manuals, course notes or anything printed by the school. These notes are not transferable year to year and you may not be getting the deal you think you are.

Filesharing for the O-C

No I dont mean that sad ripoff of 90210. Living off campus means a lot of things; it means you have to make all your own meals, you can make as much noise as you want, and when you puke in the hallway you have to clean it up yourself. One of the huge disadvantages to living off campus is that you are no longer connected to the campus network and you have to look elsewhere for your music, movies and games. There are a lot of different ways to fileshare and for the average computer user, some of these may seem a little complicated. Here is a quick little guide to getting all those files without being connected to the campus network.

The best method is using bittorrent clients. Heres what you need for this.

-Bittorent client (Azureus, Bittornado, Bittorrent)
-Bittorrent trackers

Heres a list of a couple good torrent tracker sites:

http://www.piratebay.org
http://www.torrentspy.com
http://www.mininova.org
http://www.bi-torrent.com
http://www.torrentreactor.net

The whole idea here is to go to one of these websites, search for the movie, album or game that you want, download the torrent file corresponding to the file you want and then open that little torrent file in the program. Thats basically it.

For FAQ about bittorrenting check out: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/bittorent_faq.cfm

Happy sharing.

Ikea As-is Section.... $10 desks.

Hey all,

I just got back from Ikea with some knowledge that I thought I'd share. I got a desk from Ikea for 10 dollars in the As-is section and it's the exact same desk that they have advertised for $160. The table top was in the as-is section where they usually keep old doors and glass tables and the legs were in with the candles and display cutlery. It takes a little while to sift through everything but it's worth it. I recommend to anyone that is going to Ikea to pick up some last minute furniture to check out the as-is section as I did tonight and got me a brand new desk.

Gearing up for O-WEEK.

O-WEEK is coming up and we're getting ready to record our first podcast. We'll be recording the show mostly in our studio (apartment) and eventually we are going to be looking for a decent location on campus. The Spoke Lounge is always an amazing place to chill during the day especially if you've got a laptop. Were going to be doing some recording there as well once it calms down after O-WEEK and we'll post here where and when to meet us if you want to get involved.

We would love to get some suggestions from our visitors so feel free to email us:

onewestern@gmail.com

Check out the recent events going on on campus and in London by checking out the links. To make the best of your O-WEEK, Take advantage of our links. Check out everything going on and make sure you attend everything you can.

THANK YOU everyone. Keep it up.

A few days ago I signed up for an account at Statcounter.com. I am surprised and honesty trilled to see that we are getting a lot of traffic considering we have only been around for 2 weeks. In the next month I promise we are going to continue to include more links, more posts, more interactive services such as the photoblog and the best podcast on campus. I'd like to thank everyone that has been supportive of this project and I would like to give a huge thanks to Western News for putting us in the "Special Projects" section on the new Weblogs at Western site. Thanks for all the support.

Again I would like to stress that any and all suggestions and comments regarding the ONEWESTERN project are invited. Send your comments to:

onewestern@gmail.com

I cant wait to see everybody in the next couple weeks. Tell your friends all about us.

I expect everyone to submit your pictures from o-week to the photoblog. Remember this is not a campus site so send us your party pics.

Hosting and more good stuff.

Great news...We've recently signed on with Audioblog.com for webhosting and RSS publishing so the podcast is coming soon. This whole project is coming out of my pocket so that explains why it takes a little while to get things going. With school coming up so soon it would be great to get things ready in time for the new students to get a glimpse of what onewestern is going to become over the next few months. I'll try to keep everyone updated as soon as possible in terms of updates and podcast postings. Our RSS feed is now active and Ill be posting that as soon as we have some content available as well. To those of you out there that aren't into the whole iTunes hype, check out a program called iPodderX

This is an awesome program that does all that iTunes has to offer, allows bittorrent d/l for higher transfers and it's free. I met the creator of iPodderX in Toronto a few weeks ago and not only is he a great guy but I can see a lot of awesome features becoming available very soon from iPodderX. Check it out.

Podcast Update

Hey Everybody,

We've been talking about the Podcast a lot and tons of ideas have been coming in from everywhere. We would just like to thank everyone who has contributed their thoughts and ideas. We are looking at publishing a podcast that really gives you as a Western student something that will appeal to your interests and the campus around you. One of the main ideas that we have decided on is making a themed podcast. That means that we're not going to keep the same format for every episode. We are looking at giving a brief run down of the biggest news stories at western, a listing of upcoming events, movie reviews, and couple other quick segments and then jumping right into the theme of the show. Some suggestions for themes have included Orientation week, Homecoming weekend, Awesome deals at Western, Campus Tech Support, Professor interviews, The Eng Episode and more. If you have any suggestions for themes, feel free to express them by emailing us at:

JStoyles@Gmail.com

PS> Look for us in an upcoming issue of Western News

Check out Digg.com news and the soon to be aired PODCAST.

As a student at Western, I know what it is like to be out of touch with the world for 8 months of the year. In the right-hand column you can find stories found on Digg.com as chosen by ONEWESTERN. For Western campus related news, we will be posting links to various websites where you will be able to find out what is happening on campus, as well as our podcast. Our podcast will be airing in September and will be your one stop for Western News, Campus events, Interviews, Movie and Music reviews and some other fun stuff too. We will keep you updated on the release date for the first episode, then you will be able to find us on the ITunes music store podcast section for FREE.

Today we are glad to say that we have launched the idea of this podcast. It has been a thought of mine for a little while now and I hope that we can gain attention on campus as I know a lot of you out there are using Ipods and ITunes. Why not look to the future of indy broadcasting and learn about whats going on around you. My name is Justin Stoyles. I am an Electrical Engineering student here at Western and Im glad to be a part of this project. Look forward to seeing us on the ITunes Music Store and on campus as we are planning to record many of our shows in random locations on campus. I'd Like to thank everyone for their support in getting this off the ground.

Look out for us soon.
